|Ontonagon County Public Transit, fondly known as On-Tran, is a service of the county government and operates curb-to-curb service within the county. Service hours are Monday through Friday from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm. Demand response service is available in the greater Ontonagon area. Outlying communities have dedicated service days and that information is available by contacting the dispatcher.
There is a round-trip to the City of Houghton to allow for business, appointments and shopping ‘on the hill’ once monthly. A feeder bus provides access to this trip for residents of the south end of the county. This bus often fills to capacity, so anyone interested in taking this trip needs to make reservations – the earlier the better – to secure a seat. While in Houghton the service is somewhat flexible, occasionally allowing for drop-offs and pickups of passenger groups within the city, times and details should be discussed in advance with dispatch and during the trip with the driver. Rides are provided on a first come-first served basis.
This system responds quickly in the Village of Ontonagon. When scheduling allows, passengers in outlying areas may receive demand response service on days other than dedicated service days. On-Tran generally operates 4 buses at a time, all of which have wheelchair lifts.
